Population Gender and Development Regional Support Program (PGD/PRA)

Population Strategies, Policies and Programs

At present, all CILSS member countries have explicit population policies for economic and social development. These policies, designed and operationalized in action plans with CILSS technical assistance, provide support for the countries’ food security and poverty reduction policies and strategies. Over the last three years, most of these national population policies have been revised or updated to take account of concerns arising from new paradigms such as reproductive health, gender relations, poverty reduction strategies, the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), NEPAD, etc. Guinea Bissau adopted a population policy in 2002. Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali, Mauritania and Senegal have revised their national population policies over the past three years, and the revision process is currently underway in the other countries.
